Depends on the dojo and the instructor. I was taught as a kid that it is based on promotion date not age. Which was all good and well until I got promoted before a large group of adults and they didn't care too much for a teenager outranking them. My personal opinion is that if the three of you test together, you are all the same rank and should enjoy the fact you have training partners, rather than figure out who is the senior student. It only becomes important when figuring out the senior mudansha (colored belt) student, if your dojo utilizes that position, or when you are the top instructors at a school and want to establish seniority.

At a 2nd kyu level - just enjoy having some more brown belts and treat each other like equals. If you know more, what difference does your spot when you line up really make?

Sensei, I have a question about rank. I am in a shorin-ryu, shorinkan dojo. I have studied for years in different styles, first Tae Kwon do, 3 years, achieving the rank of red belt before my husband (military) moved me. I took a break from martial arts while having children, I then studied kempo and achieved a brown belt, I studied in Okinawa for two years (shorin-ryu) and got up to my 3rd kyu (my sensei allowed me to test faster due to previous experience). My question, I'm getting ready to test for my 2nd kyu after joining a dojo in Florida. there are two other ladies who are testing with me, one older and one younger. Will I still be the highest ranking or will the one who is older be the highest?
