I have trained in a handful of Karate (and other) styles and found those to be universal truths. More importantly though, I remember making these mistakes as well as fixing them. They are a natural part of learning a martial art. Glad you enjoyed them Maddy!

Love it. As I read the list I found that these are the exact same for any club I have trained with and at one time or another I can remember my instructors fixing these mistakes in my own karate. Perfect list.

Thank you Raeenne!

Consider practicing break falls from a crouched position. Work your way up to a standing position slowly focusing on tucking your chin every time. Also consider trying it on a crash pad. Not trusting the mat can lead to not tucking your chin out of fear.

Also glad to hear you have your fists in a better position. I have also found that squeezing your pinky finger towards your thumb can help focus your punch into the index and middle finger knuckles. Good luck in your studies!

I like your blog. One thing I'm learning the hard way also is to keep my chin down, so I don't hit my head on the ground in breakfalls and so I don't leave my chin out their to be hit by an opponent. Thanks for fixing my fists.
