Last night my Sensei’s instructor, Kyoshi Eddie Bethea, gave a “combat karate” seminar at our dojo that goes over applications for techniques pulled from kata. I attended his seminar last year and both times, now, it has been educational and fun! We started off class with some basic warm-ups and moved on immediately to an application for the first moves of Pinan Shodan (the simultaneous high block and middle block, followed by a cross block, followed by a punch). There were two applications he showed for this–a counter to a shove and a counter to a rear bear hug.

After that we moved onto applications for the set of shuto-uchi (knife hand blocks) in Pinan Shodan–using them in combination so that the first was the block, the second was an arm break and the third was a strike to the neck. We also worked using the nukite-zuki (spear hand strike) and the subsequent turn to go into a hip throw, and later on worked the simultaneous block and strike and subsequent turn near the end of the kata to go into a shoulder throw. A few other joint locks and throws were included and overall it was a lot of fun and very interesting. My wife took a lot of pictures so it will take a while to sort through them and get them uploaded.
